Friday, 2 May 2014

A calm has descended on Narayanganj following burial of slain Narayanganj City Corporation (NCC) panel mayor Nazrul Islam after his two namaj-e-janaza (funeral prayers). Nazrul's 2nd namaz-e-janaza was at Siddhirganj in Narayanganj on Thursday afternoon. After the 2nd janaza, hundreds of supporters of the murdered NCC Councillor torched two offices of his suspected killers. Offices of Nur Hossain and Haji Md Yasin, the prime accused in the case over Nazrul's abduction and killing, were set afire. Witnesses say several thousand supporters of the slain Awami League leader went on a rampage after his 2nd janaza was held near Sanarpar Bus Stand under Siddhirganj police station. A lane of Dhaka-Chittagong Highway was blocked to accommodate the thousands who attended the funeral prayers of the murdered NCC panel mayor. Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Shahidul Islam of Narayanganj Police said the agitators set fire to Nur Hossain's office at Shimrail intersection. The Ward-4 Councillor's office inside a truck terminal at Shimrail was completely gutted after it was torched, said ADC Shahidul. The mob also set fire to a stage set up for Jatra (folk theatre). In the evening, office of Haji Md Yasin, another prime accused in the Nazrul Islam murder case, was vandalised and burned by Nazrul's supporters. His supporters had torched a filling station at Siddhirganj’s Mouchak and blocked the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway from Wednesday afternoon to Thursday morning in protest against the killing. Earlier, authorities deployed 10 platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) troops in Narayanganj city and Siddhirganj area as violence flared up following the seven murder, according to bdnews24.com.
