Campaign gains momentum in N-dists

RANGPUR, Nov 28 (BSS): The election campaign for the upcoming parliamentary polls has gained momentum in 34 parliamentary constituencies in eight districts of greater Rangpur and Dinajpur.
A total of 27 candidates have so far submitted nomination papers for six constituencies in Rangpur and more candidates including those of the four-party alliance were expected to submit their nominations very soon, the Election Commission (EC) officials here said.
Mokbul Hossain Shahriar of Jatiya Party (JP), Khairul Islam of Islami Shashontantra Andolan (ISA), Sharfuddin Ahmed Jhantu of Awami League (AL) and Anisur Rahman of Bikalpo Dhara submitted their nominations for Rangpur-1 (Gangachara) constituency.
Anisul Islam Mandal of JP, Ripan Sarker of ISA, Anisul Haque Chowdhury of AL and Azizul Haque (Independent) have so far submitted their nominations for Rangpur-2 (Taraganj-Badarganj) constituency.
Mohammad Afzal of Ganotantri Party, Jatiya Party Chairman and former President Alhaj Hussein Muhammad Ershad, Shahadat Hossain of CPB, Abdul Kuddus of BSD, Advocate Rezina Razzaque of AL and Golam Mostafa of ISA submitted nomination for Rangpur-3 (Sadar and part of Gangachara) constituency.
Independent candidate Shah Alam, Tipu Munshi of AL, Alhaj Karim Uddin Bharsha of JP, Bodiuzzaman of ISA and Nazrul Islam Hokkani of Workers' Party has so far submitted their nominations for Rangpur-4 (Pirgachha-Kawnia) constituency.
H N Ashiqur Rahman of AL, Fakhruzzaman Jahangir of JP, Abdul Ghani of ISA and Mominul Islam of BSD have so far submitted their nominations for Rangpur- 5 (Mithapukur) constituency.
Former Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina, Kamruzzaman of CPB, Humayun Ezaz Lebin of Ganoforum and Shahjahan Ali of ISA have so far submitted their nomination papers for Rangpur-6 (Pirganj) constituency.
BNP leaders Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Alhaj Rahim Uddin Bharsha and Nur Mohammad Mandal, BJI leaders Principal Abdul Ghani, ATM Azaharul Islam and Shah Mohammad Hafizur Rahman and Mohammad Ali (Independent) are expected to submit their nomination papers for these six constituencies, party sources said.
The concerned officials in the District Election Offices and administrations have engaged their all-out efforts for completing the necessary arrangements of holding the polls in a free, fair, transparent, impartial and credible manner.
The Returning Officers (DCs), District Election Officers (DEOs), the Assistant Returning Officers (UNOs) and concerned officials and employees are also working during the holidays as per the directives of the EC for both the polls.
Meanwhile, selection of polling centers, booths and sending of transparent ballot boxes side by side the selection of field level election officials have already been completed for all of these 34 constituencies.
Acting Deputy Election Commissioner (DEC) of RREO Shubhash Chandra Saha told the news agency that all work have been continuing as per the directives of the EC.
In Rangpur, the voters will cast their votes at 4,020 booths in 769 polling centres in all eight upazilas covering six parliamentary constituencies.
The number of voters in Rangpur now stands at 17,07,648, of them 8,38,554 are male and the remaining 8,69,094 are female while the number of voters was 18,67,237 as per the enrollment of 2001.
Like the other districts, the process of selecting a total of 769 Presiding Officers for equal number of polling centres and 12,060 Polling Officers for 4,020 polling booths in Rangpur has been completed.
A total of 26,500 transparent ballot boxes against the required 21,670 boxes for 21,670 polling booths for 34 constituencies of greater Rangpur and Dinajpur have been received and those were sent to the upazila level authorities, officials added.
There are a total of 58 upazilas in these eight districts with two parliamentary constituencies in Panchagarh, three each in Thakurgaon and Lalmonirhat, six each in Dinajpur and Rangpur, four each in Nilphamari and Kurigram and five seats in Gaibandha.
A total of 5,44,746 voters will cast their votes in Panchagarh, 2,36,512 in Thakurgaon, 17,66,220 in Dinajpur, 10,13,595 in Nilphamari, 7,10,246 in Lalmonirhat, 12,24,661 in Kurigram and 14,19,806 voters in Gaibandha.
The common people have been talking about the probable honest, educated and prospective candidates everywhere including the tea-stalls and public places of these sub-Himalayan northern districts amid cooler weather now.
