WTC Final 2025 Qualification Scenario

Can Bangladesh secure a spot if they defeat Team India?

Wednesday, 11 September 2024

Bangladesh made history by accomplishing their first-ever Test series whitewash against Pakistan, which marked a significant milestone moment in their cricket journey. The Tigers' Test series victory was even sweeter as it came in an away series. This goes to show how far the team has come in the longest format of the game.
Their recent Test series triumph has propelled them to fourth place in the World Test Championship (WTC) points table. International Cricket Council already announced that the third edition of the WTC final will be held at the iconic Lord's Cricket Ground, starting on June 11, 2025, report agencies.
With their eyes now on the WTC final, the Tigers are truly aware that the road ahead is only going to get tougher. They have some big games coming up against South Africa, India and the West Indies which determines their fate.
These matches are crucial for them and a strong performance against one of the powerhouses could boost their chances of reaching the WTC final but that won't be enough. Currently, they are in fourth place on the WTC table with a Points Percentage (PCT) of 45.83. For now, they will need to keep their momentum going in the upcoming series if they want to remain in contention. Besides that, they will have to rely on other results to go in their favour.
Upcoming matches for Bangladesh
Bangladesh vs India: Bangladesh's tour of India is just two weeks away from getting underway. The first Test kicks off on September 19 in Chennai. The second Test will follow on September 27 in Kanpur.
Meanwhile, India, the current WTC table-toppers have a PCT of 68.52. To strengthen their position, the Tigers will aim to secure at least one win, if not the series itself, in order to boost their PCT.
Bangladesh vs West Indies: Bangladesh will jet off to the Caribbean islands to play the two-match Test series in November, set to take place in Antigua and Jamaica. West Indies have been unpredictable in the WTC. Taking Bangladesh's current form into account, they will head into the tour as the favourites to move up the standings.
Bangladesh vs South Africa: This two-match Test series will be held in Bangladesh and the schedule is yet to be confirmed. It will be an important series for the home team and since they will be playing in their familiar conditions, they will be looking forward to gathering more points and improving their PCT.
What about New Zealand and Australia's chances of making the WTC 2025 final?
On the other hand, New Zealand, the winners of the 2021 World Test Championship (WTC), are currently sitting third on the table. In fact, they have a tough journey ahead as well.
Their upcoming schedule is quite challenging, with away series against Sri Lanka and India, followed by a home series against England. To remain in contention for a spot in the WTC final, New Zealand will need to perform superbly well in these matches. Bangladesh would hope that New Zealand would drop points in their journey.
