Can battery-run rickshaws be made safer?
Thursday, 28 November 2024
Halting the operation of battery-run rickshaws could create significant challenges for their drivers and investors. Many investors in these vehicles are from low-income backgrounds, relying on this as their primary source of income. Similarly, thousands of drivers depend on this profession for their livelihood. Consequently, such a decision would threaten their livelihood.
Furthermore, many believe that banning rickshaws would be inconvenient to passengers. With Dhaka's public transport crisis already severe, rickshaws often serve as the only viable means of transportation in many areas.
Transport sector experts argue that the root of the problem lies in the unplanned management of battery-run rickshaws. Unregistered vehicles and the lack of proper driver training have exacerbated the situation. However, it is worth questioning whether simply banning these rickshaws would effectively solve traffic congestion.
A more pragmatic approach would involve constituting an expert committee to thoroughly examine the issues surrounding battery-powered rickshaws. This committee could identify root causes and propose practical solutions, such as introducing a specific licensing system for these vehicles, providing driver training, and regulating their operation on designated routes. It is crucial to determine which roads these rickshaws can use and where their presence would be restricted.
