Canadian experts train wheat millers, bakers

Sunday, 9 May 2010

Canada-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CanCham) arranged a reception in honour of the delegates and trainers from Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) and the Canadian International Grains Institute (CIGI). The delegation has held a day-long technical training session for wheat millers, bakers and lab technicians in the city recently.
CanCham President Masud Rahman appreciated the initiative of the CWB and the CIGI and expressed profound thanks for extending such a friendly gesture towards Bangladesh.
Controlled by western Canadian farmers, CWB is the largest wheat and barley marketer in the world. One of Canada's biggest exporters, this Winnipeg-based organisation sells grains to over 70 countries.
The CIGI has worked with the agricultural community worldwide in the promotion and utilisation of Canadian field crops. CIGI is an industry leader in delivering customised educational programmes and technical expertise and in providing ongoing specialised technical support to customers around the world.
Their present mission at Dhaka contained two training sessions - first, they gave an overview of the Canadian system for growing, handling and marketing wheat, Canadian wheat classes and their advantages in the milling process, and the uses and advantages of Canadian wheat from an end-user perspective.
Secondly, there were technical presentations on milling and baking issues including lab tests and methods for evaluating wheat and flour quality and interpreting the results, optimising the use of Canadian wheat flour for bread and other baked goods, flour quality from a baker's perspective and troubleshooting the production problems.
