Cancer care in Bangladesh
Monday, 19 June 2023
According to a report of the World Health Organisation (WHO), there are around 1.5 million cancer patients in Bangladesh. Many of these patients die because they were not diagnosed on time. They were unaware of having cancer. Moreover, the lack of adequate resources, equipment, and trained professionals leaves many cancer patients without access to the care they need. There are only 14 oncology departments in government medical college hospitals. Also, we have a severe shortage of radiotherapy machines in our hospitals.
To address this, we urge the government to take immediate measures aimed at improving cancer care in Bangladesh. This may include increasing the number of oncology departments in hospitals, providing more radiotherapy machines and other essential equipment and training more healthcare professionals for specialisation in cancer care.
