Tuesday, 8 September 2009

To achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) within the year 2015, south western part of Bangladesh requires special attention, because impact of climate change will be severe in this region of the country.
This was told by the participants of an orientation programme for journalists organised Monday in Khulna to help them play an effective role in successful implementation of the government's development budget and achieving Millennium Development Goals, said a press release.
Management and Resources Development Initiative (MRDI) organised the programme under a project titled "Millennium Development Goals and budgetary implications" with support from United Nations Millennium Campaign (UNMC).
MRDI is implementing the project aiming to increase transparency of the government's poverty reduction initiatives and MDG programmes through greater media coverage by enhancing capacity of the journalists. Through media reporting the policymaker will get better understanding about development context of the concerned area.
Discussants said, poverty reduction programme had less impact in Khulna and Barisal divisions compared to other divisions of the country according to findings of different studies.
Apart from MDG and Annual Development Programme (ADP), the government's development budget of 2009-10 and the techniques of budget tracking at local level were included in the topics of discussion during the orientation programme.
Executive Director of MRDI Hasibur Rahman in his inaugural address said, "Capable media can help achieve MDGs and ensure implementation of ADP in a transparent way." He stressed the need for establishing an effective professional linkage between the journalists and the development workers who are working for achieving MDGs.
Issue experts and journalists from Dhaka conducted the programme participated by a total of 21 Khulna-based correspondents of national newspapers and the electronic media.
Similar orientation programme for journalists on MDGs and budgetary implications will be organised later at Rajshahi and Barisal divisional headquarters.
