Capital dredging of Ctg Port starts next month

CHITTAGONG, Apr 28: Capital dredging in the main channel of the country's major maritime port commences from the first week of May, port officials said. The Malaysian Maritime and Dredging Corporation will remove three million meter silt from the riverbed under the 'Capital Dredging and Bank Protection Project' to be accomplished within 600 days according to the contract. The company got the job as the lowest bidder from among the pre-qualified bidders at a cost of Tk 2295.44 million. The NOA was issued in favour of the company on April 5, 2011. The agreement in this regard was signed today between the chairman of Chittagong Port Authority commodore M Anwarul Islam and corporate director of the Malaysian company Datu Abdul Rahman Mohammad Noor at Chittagong Port Training Complex this afternoon. Shipping Minister Shahjahan Khan attended the contract signing ceremony as chief guest while mayor of Chittagong City Corporation M Manjur Alam, former city mayor ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, secretary of the Ministry of Shipping Adul Mannan Hawladar and senior officials of the CPA were present on the occasion. The minister in his address said that the capital dredging will remove silt deposited along the 400 meters on the right bank of the River Karnafuli from the Karnafuli Third Bridge to Sadarghat jetty no 1, facilitating navigation for more lightering vessels, enhance the port's efficiency and effectiveness and will ultimately save the city from water logging.
