Car bombs kill 20, wound 25 in Iraq

Thursday, 13 December 2007

BAGHDAD, Dec 12 (AFP): At least 20 people were killed and 25 wounded in car bomb attacks in the southern Iraqi city of Amara Wednesday, the interior ministry's operation director Brigadier General Abdel Karim Khalaf said.
Lieutenant Ali Kadhim Hassan from the Amara police earlier said three car bombs exploded within minutes of each other and the first bomb went off at 10:30 am (0730 GMT).
British military spokesman Major Mike Shearer confirmed one bomb attack, saying the device exploded in a market in Amara.
British forces handed the security control of Maysan to Iraqi forces in April but the province and Amara in particular has witnessed intense Shiite infighting, often leading to street battles between militias and police.
The latest bomb attacks in Amara came amid a series of such attacks in Iraq in the past few days after an Al-Qaeda linked group warned it would unleash a bombing campaign in the country.
