Caretaker Government (CTG)

Thursday, 14 January 2010

In recent days it has become a fashion to blame the past caretaker government (CTG) for the 1/11 episode. It is human nature to pass on the blame on others to hide one's own failures. Some quarters are even asking for the 'trial' of the persons involved in the change over. This is being masterminded by a few influential persons whose controversial role during the pre-CTG era came under drastic scrutiny. We all know why and how the then political circumstances and deteriorating law and order situation pushed the country towards the change over. There was no other alternative whatsoever due to the intransigence of the power hungry groups. The fact, however, remains that the people of this country, save a few disgruntled and corrupt politicians overwhelmingly supported the change over. Even the international community, seeing the internal huge public support, came out in support of the CTG.
The role of the administration of the CTG in handling the affairs of the country cannot be termed as un-blemished. But there cannot be any denial that entrenched corruption got a tremendous jerk. Persons who once considered themselves too powerful and above any kind of law of the country and indulged in corruption and money laundering were brought to face charges in court. Henceforth, I am sure before embarking upon any large scale corruption a person will think twice about his accountability to the nation. May be the handling of the politicians and the political issues by the CTG was not proper and showed signs of immaturity, yet the regime presented the nation a less faulty, unbiased voter list, a national ID card and most importantly a free and fair election acclaimed by the international community, through which the present Government has taken over. The contribution of the CTG in this regard and peaceful transfer of power to the elected Government will be gratefully remembered by the nation for years to come. Let us be bold enough not only to criticize their failures but also be fair enough to praise their successes and achievements. Let us forget the politics of revenge forever because it will not take the nation anywhere except chaos and instability.
May I conclude with a famous saying from Leo Tolstoy, " Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself".
