Cargo ship sinks near Sandwip channel

CHITTAGONG, Apr 3: A food grain-laden vessel sank near the Sandwip channel on Friday morning after colliding head-on with another ship. All the crew members managed to move to safety on the seashore. Akkas Ali, joint director of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) said the food grain-laden ship Mershad-2, carrying 100 tonnes of goods sank after colliding head-on with another vessel, M V Salma, beside south-east Boyar of the Sandwip channel at 9:00 am. The Mershad-2, carrying food grains owned by City Group, was heading for Narayanganj, from the outer anchorage point of Chittagong Port, Akkas Ali added. — BSS
