RANGPUR, May 4: Authorities of Carmichael University College in Rangpur district are facing serious problems to maintain its academic standard as the college has been beset with manifold problems like an inadequate number of teachers, insufficient accommodation and transport facilities. The team of the faculty members of the college is not at full-strength as only 161 teachers out of 184 provisioned for the institute have been imparting education to around 20 thousand students on the campus, the college sources said. Badrul Islam, a first year honours student of English department said the shortage of teachers is seriously hampering education in the college as the classes are not being held regularly. The student who came from Fulbari under Dinajpur district, also said that the students of the colleges are also facing accommodation problems as the college does not have the required number of dormitories on the campus. The college has four dormitories for male students and three for female students on the campus. The seven dormitories can accommodate only 1900 students of the college. A large number of students, who failed to avail themselves of accommodation in the dormitories, are residing in messes and rented houses around the campus of the college. "The female students, who reside in messes or rented houses in the town, are the worst sufferers, as a sense of insecurity haunts them round the clock," Morseda Begum, a second year student of the college, said. Poor students like her are facing a lot of hassles in the case of failing to avail themselves of accommodation in dormitories as they cannot bear additional expenses for renting a house outside the campus, she added. Inadequate transport facilities also cause sufferings to the students who come from different parts of the town to attend classes. The college has only three buses which cannot meet the demand of a large number of students. The ramshackle buses very often go inoperative as their old engines do not work properly always. Students are also facing problems to prepare their lessons as the library in the college does not have a sufficient number of books to meet the demand of around 20,000 students. The college has only five dormitories though it needs about eight buildings to accommodate the existing number of students, she said. Prof Shahara Ferdous, vice-principal of the college, said around 20 thousand students are studying at the honours, masters and degree levels. The college is running about 19 disciplines with inadequate teachers, staff members, accommodation and transport facilities for the students, the principal said. When contacted, Prof Deep Kendra Nath Das, principal of the college informed that the college authorities have already taken a decision to invite tenders for constructing one five-storey academic building and two dormitories one for male and another for female students. The authority is also planning to construct more paved roads on the campus and renovate the existing ones.
