Carrot farming turns into a money spinner in Rangpur

Farmers earning hefty profits from selling their produce since beginning of the harvest

RANGPUR, Jan 14: Farmers in different areas of Rangpur region have found carrot farming to be a profitable venture in the current season.
Sources said harvesting of the crop is going on across the district and farmers have been earning windfall profits from selling their produce in the markets since beginning of the harvest.
Presently, per kg carrot is being sold at Tk60 to Tk70 in different markets across the region.
Asadul Mia, a farmer of Char Thakurdas village in Kaunia Upazila of the district, told FE that he cultivated carrot on 48 decimals of land this season. He has already earned Tk16,000 from the sale of his produce and is also expecting more profit during rest of the season. Last year, he earned a good profit from its early harvest, he also said.
Aftabul Haque, another carrot cultivator of Nabdiganj village in Pirgachha upazila of Rangpur district, said he has earned Tk18,000 so far by selling carrot in the current season.
He is optimistic of earning more profit during the remaining part of the season, he added. He expressed satisfaction over the yield he has achieved so far of the vegetable this year.
Sources at the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Rangpur, said the soil of many areas of the region is very much suitable for farming of carrot and other vegetables, so it is being cultivated in abundance in many areas.
Peasants have also earned good profit from cultivation of carrot and some other vegetables in recent years. Owing to early harvest, the growers are getting good profit from its sale in markets which is encouraging them to expand farming of the vegetable next season, sources also said.
The growers are given necessary advice as well as assistance by the DAE officials in this regard, the sources added.
