CA's spl asst leaves for Beijing

Chief Adviser's Special Assistant for Youth and Sports Mahbub Jamil left for China Thursday to attend the opening ceremony of the 29th Beijing Olympic Games that begins today (Friday), reports UNB.

BOA President General Moeen U Ahmed and BOA Secretary General Kutubuddin Ahmed also left Dhaka Thursday to attend the Beijing Olympics.

Mahbub Jamil, who is attending the World's biggest sports carnival on invitation from the Olympic Games organising committee, will also join the meeting of the Commonwealth Sports Ministers Saturday morning at Beijing Hilton Hotel.

He will be present at the welcome ceremony for the Bangladesh delegates by the organising committee at the Games village Saturday and will join a reception to be held by the World Tourism Organisation (WTO) Sunday.

Mahbub Jamil will attend a dinner in honour of the Bangladesh contingent to be hosted by the Bangladesh Embassy Monday (Aug 11) before departing for home Tuesday (Aug 12).

Earlier, a 12-member main batch of Bangladesh contingent left Dhaka for China Wednesday to take part in the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to be held August 8-24 with a view to gathering experience ahead of the upcoming South Asian Games in Dhaka.

Chef-de-mission of Bangladesh contingent Maj Gen Shakil Ahmed and BOA director cum CEO Col (retd) Mohammad Wali Ullah left the capital for Beijing on Monday as advance party in the first batch.

Bangladesh contingent comprising five sportsmen -- two athletes, two swimmers and one shooter, three team manager-cum-coaches, one general team manager, one observer (Sharmin Akhter) and two participants of youth camp.

Of the 28 disciplines in the Olympics, Bangladesh will compete in three disciplines -- athletics, swimming and shooting.

Some 10,500 athletes and nearly 5,500 officials from across the World are taking part in the 17-day greatest show on earth for the 302 gold at stake.

Ace swimmer Mohammad Rubel Rana will carry the national flag in the grand opening ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
