Monday, 25 October 2010

A victim of the Rupganj clash between locals and law enforcers has succumbed to his injuries, reports bdnews24.com.
Mostofa Jamal, 26, died around 9am Sunday. He sustained critical bullet wounds during the clash Saturday. According Saturday's reports, 10 people were admitted in hospital with bullet injuries.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar police sub-inspector (SI) Abdul Bari confirmed the death.
Jamal's cousin Maksudul Hasan told the news agency that Rupganj MP Gazi Golam Dastagir visited the hospital and donated Tk 20,000 for the burial.
Meanwhile, Rupganj police SI Mohammad Munsef filed a case Saturday accusing some 3,000 or 4,000 unidentified people for vandalism, loot and arson.
SI Bari said that additional law enforcers have been deployed in the area to maintain order. Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) and police have been patrolling the area since Sunday morning.
Former MP of the area, also a former army chief K M Shafiullah, told reporters that the incident occurred over a misunderstanding.
On the other hand, current MP Dastagir, a freedom fighter, and ruling Awami League joint general secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif alleged that the main opposition BNP had instigated the locals to protest and demonstrate.
However, people of Bariachhani village of Rupganj have claimed that two locals were shot dead and their bodies confiscated by RAB.
Families of the two said Sunday that they were shot dead and taken away in a RAB vehicle. More than a hundred people - men, women and children - bore visible injury marks bearing testimony to police violence from the day before.
Villager Lehaj Uddin alleged that his son Saidur Islam, 18, was shot during the clash Saturday near the Ichhapur bridge. Later a RAB vehicle picked up his body.
Another villager Shahar Ali, had similar complaints. His son Masudur Rahman, 32, was also whisked away in a RAB vehicle.
A witness named Mohammad Sohel said the clash between RAB and locals began around 11am Saturday. The elite crime busters fired several rounds to push back the villagers. Saidur and Masudur got shot and fell to the ground. Later a RAB pickup allegedly took away their bodies.
Several men and women in the village showed their wounds and alleged that RAB men have beaten them mercilessly. Shanto, a 10-year old, said that RAB had forced many of the locals to bring water and wash away the blood from the scene. He said, "They even threatened to kill me when I refused."
Bariachhani and surrounding villages of Technoda, Goalpara, Bairara Tek, Maijpara, and Kumarpara were in a similar condition. Locals said that all the men had gone into hiding fearing arrest.
Narayanganj ASP Saidur Rahman said he did not know anything of the two missing people and there were no complaints in the local police station.
RAB director general Mokhlesur Rahman told bdnews24.com that these allegations about people being shot or injured and bodies being taken away in RAB vehicles will be investigated. "But there is no need to lodge complaints in that regard."
