Saturday, 21 June 2014

A case has been filed over the attack on former Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) President AKM Enamul Haque Shamim. Three have been accused in the case but none was named. But in the case details, the plaintiff said it was possible that the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami and local or national rivals could be behind the attack. Shamim’s uncle Nasir Ahmed lodged the case around 11:00pm on Friday with Dhanmondi Police Station, said Sub-Inspector Iftekharul Alam. According to case details, three unidentified motorcycle riders opened fire on Shamim’s car in an attempt to kill him when the vehicle was in front of Ibn Sina Hospital in Dhanmondi on Thursday. Miscreants fired at Shamim, a member of Awami League’s central committee, around 10am that day a little after he left his Dhanmondi-10 residence. He was rushed to Bangladesh Medical College and Hospital at first and later taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital. Shamim was finally shifted to Combined Military Hospital for better treatment. He was shot twice in his left hand, doctors said. Shamim served as BCL president from 1994 to 1998. He was also a BCL leader of Jahangirnagar University (JU) unit. Hailing from Shariatpur, Shamim was vice president of JU Central Students’ Union from 1989 to 1991, according to a news agency.
