Casualties of reckless driving

Thursday, 6 September 2018

Police sub-inspector Uttam Kumar Sarkar of Rupnagar police station died on the spot after he was run over by a bus near Rainkhola intersection in Mirpur, Dhaka on September 02.
There were several other road accidents across the country over the past two weeks. It seems that there has been little improvement in road safety despite a lot of hue and cry during the past month.
Reckless drivers, especially of bus services, do not seem to have any fear. Most buses are often seen racing with each other on busy roads. On July 29, during one such race, a speeding bus had ploughed through a group of college students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College. Two students had died on the spot while others had to be admitted to the hospital in critical conditions.
Often passengers inside the bus or speeding vehicle tend to overlook that the driver is speeding. They should speak out and ask the driver to slow down. This will ensure safety of everyone who is on the road at the moment.
It should be remembered that lives are more valuable than time. Awareness about road safety and following traffic rules needs to be generated among the masses.
