KHULNA, Dec 7: The Joragate kitchen market in Khulna was full of cattle, but the sellers said there were not many buyers because prices remained high compared with past year.
The market is the only temporary cattle market set up by the Khulna City Corporation on the occasion of Eid-ul-Azha.
Market sources said people had also been visiting markets outside the city at Rupsa, Shahapur, Jamira and Phultala to buy sacrificial animals.
Sellers have been asking between Tk 25,000 and Tk 30,000 for a medium-sized bull, which sold between Tk 18,000 and Tk 24,000 in the past year. There are not many large-sized bulls on the market this year, the sellers said.
Lack of inflow of cattle from India has also pushed up the prices, traders in different markets said. The cattle put on sale in the markets are mostly raised by the villages.
However, the traders sounded happy, as they did not face extortion on their way to the markets because of the present situation in the country.
