CCC announces Tk 6.22b budget without new tax

Friday, 27 June 2008

CHITTAGONG, June 26 (UNB): The Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Thursday rolled out a Tk 6.22 billion (622.06 crore) budget for 2008-2009 fiscal year but decided not to impose any new tax.

Acting CCC Mayor M Manjur Alam also approved a revised budget of Tk2.08 billion (208.22 crore) for the previous fiscal year ending this month.

Unveiling the proposed budget in the city's Theatre Institute Auditorium, Manjur said areas of tax have been expanded but no new tax has been slapped.

The CCC will mobilise Tk 4.72 billion (472.06 crore) of the total budget amount from its own sources while it expects Tk 1.50 billion (150 crore) in development grant from the government coffer. Some Tk 2.34 crore has been shown as surplus in the proposed budget.

In the budget Tk 3.77 billion (377.76 crore) was meant for the port city's infrastructure development. As the second largest city faces a serious water-logging during monsoon, the corporation will spend more money for a permanent solution to the problem in the next fiscal year.

It will also spend a good amount of the development allocation to repair rundown roads and construct new roads on both sides of some city canals.

The acting mayor said five development projects involving Tk 3.65 billion (365.33 crore) are awaiting approval from the government. "If the projects are approved another Tk 1.0 billion (100 crore) will be available in next fiscal year," he said.

The acting mayor said the CCC would realise Tk 2.95 billion (295.70 crore) in outstanding tax from different government and autonomous bodies.

It will get Tk 2.21 billion (221.75 crore) from only the Chittagong Port Authority, he said.
