CCC mayor faces contempt charge

Friday, 29 August 2014

The High Court (HC) issued Thursday a rule asking 11 people, including Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) mayor Mohammad Monjur Alam, to explain why contempt of court proceedings should not be drawn against them for flouting its interim order prohibiting the construction of a market, reports UNB.
Responding to a petition, the HC on August 14 issued an order restricting for six months the construction of Bahaddarhat municipal market as it was being erected obstructing the drains of the area which would ultimately block the sewerage system of the port city.
Issuing the rule, a vacation HC division bench comprising Justice Sheikh Hassan Arif and Justice ATM Saifur Rahman also asked CCC chief executive officer Ali Ahmed to appear in person before it on September 15 to give explanation over his stance.
The rule has been made returnable in four weeks.
The contempt of court rule came following a petition filed by four persons, including Shojon Super Market Businessman Welfare Samity.
