Monday, 19 July 2010
Newly elected Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Md Manjur Alam Manju was sworn in Sunday.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina administered the oath to Manju at a ceremony at the International Conference Centre of the Prime Minister's Office (PMO), reports UNB.
Cabinet Ministers, advisers to the PM, CCC councillors and high officials of the government were, among others, present on the occasion.
Manjur Alam Manju, as the candidate of Bangladesh Nationalist Party-backed Chattagram Unnayan Andolan, won the CCC mayoral race on June 17 defeating Awami League-supported Nagorik Committee candidate ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
Meanwhile, a case was filed Sunday against Manju for concealing information in the affidavit while submitting the nomination papers.
Former CCC mayor and Chittagong Awami League president Mohiuddin Chowdhury filed the case with first Joint District Judge's court.
About the case the CCC mayor said that he did not want to say anything further before getting a copy of the case. But he thought that his predecessor might have filed the case 'out of personal motive.'
Manjur made the remarks after placing wreaths and offering fateha at the mazar of President Ziaur Rahman, founder of BNP at the city's Sher-e-Bangla Nagar at 4.00 pm.
He also said as far as he knew there was no mistake in his affidavit.
BNP leaders including its secretary general Khandaker Delwar Hossain, M Morshed Khan, Abdullah Al Noman, Sadeq Hossain Khoka, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, Mir Nasiruddin Ahmed, Dr Osman Faruq, Fazlur Rahman Patal, Jafrul Islam Chowdhury and Amanullah Aman were also present at the mazar.
About the filing of the case against Manjur, Delwar Hossain told the journalists that such type of case was quite usual in the country and he thought that no benefit would be derived from the case.
He said the port city dwellers had given absolute verdict in favour of Manjur in the election expressing their confidence in Manjur and 'no-confidence to the present government's failures, misdeeds and misrule.'
