CHITTAGONG, June 06: Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) has undertaken initiatives of installing energy saving lights instead of existing tube lights in the streets.

With the commissioning of the energy saving lights, the CCC would be able to save at least Tk 30 million a year, concerned sources said.

According to a CCC statistics, the corporation is to spend Tk 60 million for lighting purpose in the city areas annually. Total number of lights on the highways in the city corporation area, and in 41 wards, is 30 thousand; but excepting the main roads, tube light installed on most of the city roads remain inoperative.

On an average, 100 tube lights go out of order everyday due to frequent pilferage of electric cable and lights, low quality of lights and sockets, in all the wards under the city area. It leads to the incidents of snatching as well as accidents on the roads.

CCC sources said, with a view to minimising consumption of power and reducing maintenance costs, it has been decided to install energy saving lights on the streets under 41 wards of the CCC.
