CCC polls a turnaround: Alamgir

Sunday, 20 June 2010

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Senior Joint Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that the people have turned against the government, which has been reflected in the results of the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) election, reports bdnews24.com.
He made the statement in a reaction to the polls that saw an impressive victory of BNP-backed candidate M Manjur Alam against the ruling Awami League-backed candidate Mohiuddin Chowdhury.
Manzur beat Mohiuddin by 95,528 votes in the June 17 polls.
Fakhrul said, "People have begun to turn around against a fascist government."
"It is high time to fight against the government", he added.
The BNP leader lambasted what he referred to as the government's 'policy of suppression'.
"They want to silence dissent with torture. All of us should launch a movement against them."
"They do not believe in press freedom. That's why they closed both Channel 1 and daily Amar Desh and are not allowing transmission of Jamuna TV", he added.
Fakhrul alleged that journalists across the country were being tortured. "They want to stop the freedom of expression by suppression."
He condemned the government for alleged torture on Mahmudur Rahman, acting editor of Amar Desh, during police remand.
