To mitigate the waterlogging crisis in Chattogram city, the CCC is set to take over the management of 36 canals, sluice gates and other vital infrastructure, as 21 other canals will be excavated for the same purpose following a pre-feasibility study.
Under a Tk 60 billion mega project of the Chattogram Development Authority (CDA), the Engineering Corps of Bangladesh Army worked on the 36 canals since April 24, 2018, which reached 95 per cent completion. Currently, the navigation of waters at the canals is normal, but the Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) currently lacks the necessary funds and skilled manpower to operate infrastructure under the mega project effectively, sources said.
A Dutch company will conduct a survey on drainage management and solid waste management in 41 wards of the port city, for CCC, including the 21 canals, which had disappeared being illegally occupied by land grabbers. Responding to the request of CCC, the Netherlands Embassy in Bangladesh is funding the pre-feasibility study.
There are a total of 57 canals in Chattogram and although the 21 canals do not fall under any mega project it will not be possible to completely resolve the waterlogging problem without the restoration of these canals, CCC Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said.
