CHITTAGONG, Jun 10: Chittagong trade body leader and ruling party MP Abdul Latif Wednesday urged the commerce ministry to extend the time limit for import of old cloth up to June 30 considering the interest of the poor and distressed people.
In an urgent fax message to Commerce Minister Faruk Khan Chittagong Chamber president Abdul Latif said, the exporters of old cloth after having received a letter of credit (L/C) start procuring clothes from different sources for shipment that includes a time-taking process.
He said the old clothes are a major source of garment for the poor, helpless and downtrodden people of a country like Bangladesh. The people of Bangladesh will suffer a lot for want of warm clothes especially ahead of the upcoming winter season.
Mr Abdul Latif said the government should, in consideration of the poor condition of the teeming millions, extend the time of old cloth shipment of the current fiscal up to June 30.
"If the matter is not considered sympathetically it is sure to create a negative impression in the minds of the common people about the present government besides leaving the old cloth importers into difficulty, because there is no other means of procuring warm clothes at cheaper rate," he said.
Traditionally all Bangladesh governments in the past allowed more time and facilities for import and shipment of old clothes from abroad for the interest of the common people, he added.
