Revenue earnings by the office of the Chief Controller of Imports & Exports (CCI&E) increased by 22.38 per cent in the first eight months of the current fiscal year (FY) over that of the corresponding period, according to the CCI&E data.
Its revenue collections in the forms of import, export and indenting registration fees stood at about Tk 678 million in the July-February of FY 2013-14, compared to Tk 554.3 million in the same period of the last FY, according to the CCI&E data.
Sources concerned attributed the increase in revenue earnings to rise in registration and renewal fees on import, export and indenting certificate following an increased export and import of different products in the current FY.
The CCI&E, under the Ministry of Commerce, has taken some steps to double the non-tax revenue collection within the next four years, officials said.
To this end, the government has liberalised the Import Policy Order, which will gradually be implemented during the period of 2012-15.
The CCI&E has set a target of collecting over Tk 900 million in non-tax revenue in the current fiscal.
The sources said revenue collection would definitely exceed the target, if the trend persists throughout the next four months of the fiscal.
The revenue collection target for the current fiscal is 12.56 per cent higher than that of the previous fiscal, according to the official data.
In the previous fiscal the government's revenue earnings from non-tax revenue sources exceeded the target due to a strengthened drive and an increase in registration and renewal fees, sources said.
The CCI&E earned Tk 414.2 million in non-tax revenue in the FY 2008-09. It rose to Tk 815.6 million in the FY 2012-13, an increase of 97 per cent, statistics showed.
