CHITTAGONG, Feb 10: With handover of the task of operating Chittagong Container Terminal (CCT) of Chittagong Port (CP) to the private operator 'Saif Powertec Ltd', the staying period of vessels at the CP has been reduced to two days from 11 to 15 days earlier, sources said.
It was made possible due to efficient management of the CCT by the company and the overall management by the joint forces.
Port users said with the successful handover to the private management, the CP has obtained a wide publicity as dynamic and efficient port of international standard erasing its bad name for the last 30 years.
According to the sources, the number of vessels, operated at the CCT, has now doubled. It has lessened vessel-congestion at the outer anchorage considerably. The importers are now able to trace out the location of their containers within 30 seconds only via short message service (SMS).
It, however, removed all sorts of harassment including financial losses.
An importer had to spend Tk 9,350 against each container before. It has now been reduced to Tk 1,600 only. Importers do not have to spend money for traffic department personnel, operators and other labourers.
The port authority had to spend Tk 4,820 for shore handling, gantry crane, trailor operators, empty container shifting task and others previously. However, expenditures on similar procedures have declined to Tk 1,200 only now.
At the same time, vessel-owners have also got rid of spending a big amount of money worth $10,000 per day, each vessel had to bear huge expenditures of $1,10,000 in 11 days at the port earlier.
A vessel needs to spend now maximum $30,000 only while saving $80,000 in each trip.
Arrival of the feeder vessels is on a rise at the principal sea port of the country at an increasing rate day by day.
