CEC rules out any scope for Rohingyas

BANDARBAN, Dec 3 (UNB): Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Dr ATM Shamsul Huda said today (Monday) that there was no scope for inclusion of Rohingya refugees in the voters' list.
"Only the country's real citizens who live in particular addresses will be made voters and provided with voter identity (ID) cards," the CEC told a views-exchange meeting here during his first-ever tour in the hill district.
The Circle Chief of the area, government officials, public representatives, the district election officer, enumerators, supervisors and local elite attended the meeting held at Bandarban Tribal Cultural Institution.
Election Commissioner Brigadier General (retd) M Shakhawat Hossain, 69 Infantry Brigade Commander Brigadier General ATM Ziaul Hasan, Bandarban Hill District Council Chairman Prof Tanzama Lusai, Sadar Zone Commander Lieutenant Colonel Mohammad Ali Sohel and the Superintendent of Police were present as special guests.
Deputy Commissioner M Abdul Majid Shah Akhand presided over the meeting.
The army officials apprised the meeting of the progress of formulating the voters' list with photographs.
They said 98 per cent work of preparing the voters' list with photographs and national ID cards has already been completed in the district and the remaining job would be finished by December 9.
In the second phase of the gigantic work, voter registration would start in Thanchhi Upazila on December 13 while taking of photographs on December 26.
Earlier, the CEC and the election commissioner separately exchanged views with the officials engaged in preparing the voters' list at the Cantonment and the Circuit House.
The CEC is scheduled to leave for Rangamati today (Tuesday) after reviewing the photograph taking and data entry work.
