Celebrating Int'l Read to Me Day

Sunday, 20 March 2022

March 19 marks the International Read to Me Day. On this day, children are encouraged to remind the adults in their life to read to them. The day also empowers children to participate in the conversation about their own literacy. Reading is a multifaceted process involving word recognition, comprehension, fluency, and motivation to make meaning from print. But it is so much more. It is a sharing of pasts and futures, a relaying of cultures and beliefs, and a portal for discovery and realisations that can shape and influence not just the children's literacy but their entire understanding of the world in which they live and beyond.
On the occasion of the International Read to Me Day, we can promote, encourage and inspire our children to reading activities. Although observing this day may seem unfamiliar to many of us, it can be an important day for all children. You can celebrate the day by promising to read to a child.
