Cell phone subscribers' base rises by 0.54m last month

The country's mobile phone subscriber base has increased by 0.54 million new users last month, sources in Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (BTRC) revealed recently, taking the total to 45.75 million at the end of March this year.
The total number of active subscribers stood at 45.21 million in February.
This is also a significant rise from March last year when the total figure was 38.93 million, meaning that the country's total number of active subscriber has increased by 6.83 million over the last 12 months.
Among the six mobile phone operators currently active in the market, AKTEL has added the largest number of subscribers in March, increasing its subscriber base by 0.17 million and edging its nearest competitor, Banglalink, marginally which has added 0.13 million during the period under review.
AKTEL's total number of subscribers now stands at 8.76 million while Banglalink has got a total of 1.83 million users.
GrameenPhone -- the leading operator in the country accounting for almost 40 percent of the total subscriber base -- is placed third in terms of monthly growth with 0.11 million new users connected in March, but still outnumbering its competitors with a total of 21.05 million subscribers.
Warid Telecom, the newest member of the country's telecom giant club followed immediately behind with 0.6 million new connections, while the relatively older players of the telecom market Citicell and the government owned Teletalk has increased by 0.2 million and 0.5 million respectively.
GrameenPhone nevertheless leads the table of the annual growth rate of the six operators as its subscriber base has increased by 3.24 million from that of March 2008.
Banglalink is the second fastest growing operator during the last 12 months with 2.39 million newly added subscribers. AKTEL followed with 1.31 million new additions.
Teletalk and Warid Telecom are, however, the two players which have lost subscribers over the past 12 months, as both of the operators' subscriber numbers has decreased to 0.98 million and 2.26 million respectively from 1.01 million and 2.79 million of last year.
