Censor board warns of legal action against film clubs violating rules

Thursday, 20 November 2008

Government authorities warned of legal action against the film clubs organising film festivals violating existing rules, reports UNB.
Bangladesh Film Censor Board said that the board expects only registered and permitted film clubs to arrange film festivals maintaining relevant existing laws.
"It has been noticed in the few days that some unregistered film clubs and other organisations are holding film festivals in different auditoriums and public places without permission of the Censor Board or the Information Ministry. It is contrary to section 7(1) of the Film Clubs (Registration and Control) Act 1980 and is a punishable offence as per its section 10," said an Information Ministry release.
It also noted that most of the film clubs did not have registration or their registration dates expired. In this regard, those clubs have no legal rights to conduct activities under the act.
"Most of the films screened in the so-called film festivals are uncensored. This type of screening is against the Censorship of Films Act 1963 and a punishable crime. Moreover, the screening of films in unlicensed places is also against The Cinematograph Act 1918 (amended in 1982)," the release said.
