FE REPORT | Friday, 7 July 2023
The Central Hospital authorities have filed a defamation case against gynecologist Sangjukta Saha on charge of giving 'intentionally false, baseless, malafide and defamatory statements' against the hospital regarding the deaths of Mahbuba Rahman Akhi and her newborn.
The Central Hospital authorities have sought a decree from the court to direct the gynecologist to pay Tk 5.0 billion for publishing 'defamatory' statements against the reputation and good will of the hospital.
They also sought another decree of permanent injunction restraining the gynecologist from publishing 'defamatory' statements against the plaintiff.
Prof Dr Motior Rahman, Chairman and Managing Director of the Central Hospital, filed the case on Thursday with the First Joint District Judge's Court in Dhaka, said his lawyer Shah Monjurul Hoque in a briefing.
The court has admitted the case and fixed July 25 for further hearing on the issue, said the lawyer.
Earlier, the hospital authorities sent a legal notice to Dr Sangjukta Saha seeking withdrawal of her statement blaming the hospital for the deaths of Mahbuba Rahman Akhi and her newborn.
The newborn of Mahbuba Rahman Akhi died while she was undergoing C-section in the hospital on June 10. Akhi, 25, who was later taken to LabAid Hospital and had been on life support there, died on June 18.
Akhi's husband Yakub Ali filed a case with Dhanmondi Police Station on June 14 accusing the doctors concerned and the hospital authorities for the botched C-section.
