Covers of two rare reprinted books on Dhaka styled "Dhaka: A Record of Its Changing Fortune" by A H Dani and "Dhaka Past Present Future", edited by Sharif Uddin Ahmed were unveiled at a function at the auditorium of Asiatic Society of Bangladesh (ASB) Thursday.
Centre for Dhaka Studies (CDS) was also launched at the function where National Professor Kabir Chowdhury was present as the chief guest. ASB President Prof Dr Sirajul Islam chaired the programme.
Prof Kabir Chowdhury said that more scholarly works are needed to save the glorious history of Dhaka. He urged the Asiatic Society authorities to continue their efforts to protect the real history of Dhaka.
Prof Nazrul Islam, Chairman of University Grants Commission, presented a keynote paper on 'Governance of Dhaka' on the occasion.
He said Dhaka is one of the largest mega cities of the world. But due to lack of well planning it has now become a city of hazards, he added.
"Dhaka is an uncontrolled, unplanned and uncoordinated city. Good governance is urgently needed to save Dhaka," he added.
The programme was also attended, among others, by former chairman of RAJUK Eng. Anwarul Alam, general secretary of Asiatic Society Prof Mahfuja Khatun, Prof Sharif Uddin Ahmed and AKM Golam Rabbani.
