LALMONIRHAT, June 27: Bangladesh's first-ever police museum with an exclusive collection of historical articles and exhibits has become a reality on the premises of Hatibandha Police Station in Lalmonirhat.
Inspector General of Bangladesh Police IGP Benazir Ahmed recently opened the Bangladesh Police Museum, which throws light on the contribution of police forces to the 1971 Liberation War.
While inaugurating the museum, Benazir said that the museum would contribute a lot to increasing the knowledge of younger generations.
According to police, the museum building was built in 1916 during the British rule. It was used as a police station for years. However, it was abandoned recently after a new police station had been built next to it.
Lalmonirhat police later decided to turn the century-old building into a police museum. This was done under the supervision of Lalmonirhat District Superintendent of Police (SP) Abida Sultana.
"This museum will play a vital role in knowing about the past history and glorious contribution of Bangladesh police to our independence," she said.
Visiting the museum, it has been seen that it has seven galleries. The first gallery will feature the origins and evolution of policing in the region starting from the Sultanate and Mughal periods, the British era, all the way up to the Indian subcontinent ahead of partition. There are also galleries for Bangabandhu and Bangladesh police.
The museum showcases a number of old arms and ammunition, vehicles, uniforms, transports, wireless sets and other accessories used by police in different times.
