Friday, 22 June 2007

Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed has said the caretaker government (CG) wants to make room for competent and responsible persons in the country's sports arena to keep it healthy, fair and dynamic.
He has said his government is also determined to bring back right and democratic trend removing corruption and irregularities from the sports field.
The CA was addressing a function, organised by the youth and sports ministry at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium, for the distribution of National Sports Award-2006 in the city Thursday, reports UNB.
He said: "We've seen in different times that the country's sports arena and sports organisations were politically influenced, which is not desirable. We're determined to raise the sports arena on a strong and permanent footing."
The CA said his government wants to ensure participation of sports persons and sports-loving people in the sports arena.
He expressed his firm belief that the country's sports authorities would adopt a well-coordinated action plan and implement it in addition to formulating realistic policy guidelines to reap desired results in the sports sector.
"We'll have to work with fresh spirit ignoring all failures in the past-- lack of fair plan in the sports arena, negligence, aimless leadership and weakness of the management. And for this, decentralisation of sports management in all spheres and giving priority to the participation of former players are necessary," he said.
The CA distributed the prestigious state awards to 10 sports personalities who were nominated earlier for the National Sports Award for the year 2006.
The award recipients were M Hasanuzzaman Bablu and Khondokar Wasim Iqbal (football), Mohammad Rafique (Cricket), Begum Sharmin Akter (shooting), M Ehtesham Sultan (hockey), Fouzia Huda Jui (athletics), Begum Mah-muda Sharif (swimming), Azad Abul Kalam (bodybuilding and weightlifting), Nayana Chow-dhury (judo) and MA Hamid (organiser).
Each award carries a gold medal, Tk 20,000 in cash and a citation. Youth and Sports Adviser Tapan Chowdhury presided over the function. Youth and Sports Secretary Golam Mostofa Talukder read out the citations as the awards were handed over to each recipient.
Advisers to the Caretaker Government, deputy speaker of parliament, Dhaka city mayor, sports persons, leaders of sports federations, distinguished personalities and senior civil and military officials were present at the function.
Fakhruddin Ahmed called for turning the practice of sports as social movement to build a healthy nation and stressed the need for giving special importance on practice of games at grassroots level across the country - in clubs, schools and colleges.
He also called upon all to spontaneously participate in such a movement.
Fakhruddin mentioned some noteworthy achievements of Bangladesh in various international sport events, including the recent wins in the World Cup cricket matches against India and South Africa, previous victories against World Cup winners Australia, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. But these successes had come in erratic manner -- there was lack of continuation, he said, adding that the time had come to find out the reasons.
Terming a successful sports person a roving ambassador, he said a player can place the country and the nation in the world forum by his/her bright presence and success.
Congratulating the national sports award recipients, he urged them to spread the `mantra' of winning a sports battle and to educate the players the philosophy to accept defeat with equanimity and be modest in their moments of victory.
