CG wants to hold election under emergency to see its cohorts victorious: Delwar

Sunday, 10 August 2008

BNP secretary general Khondoker Delwar Hossain Saturday alleged that the Caretaker Government (CG) wants to hold the general election under the state of emergency to see the "politicians of entente" victorious to get the seal of legitimacy, reports UNB/ bdnews24.com.

"Because, if the emergency is withdrawn, BNP would win the elections," Khondoker Delwar Hossain made the observation while speaking at a views-exchange meeting of Jatiyotabadi Ainjibi Forum, the pro-BNP lawyers' group. Jatiyotabadi Ainjibi Forum Dhaka unit organised the meeting at Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium in the city Saturday.

Delwar called on party supporters to build up a movement for release of detained former premier Khaleda Zia.

Presided over by Ainjibi Forum's senior vice-president Fazlur Rahman Khan, the meeting was also addressed by Forum president and BNP vice-president TH Khan, Justice Habibul Islam Bhuiyan, Faisal Mahmud Foizee, Adv Majibur Rahman, Adv Sanaullah Mia, Adv Masud Ahmed Talukdar, Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Adv Arfan Uddin Khan, Adv Joynul Abedin and Jubo Dol secretary general Moazzem Hossain Alal.

Delwar deplored that the caretaker government put BNP in an adversarial position, "produced a fake BNP in its factory" because they know the BNP led by Khaleda Zia will win the elections. In his two-pronged attack he also said the government has entered into a deal with a political party to get its legitimacy.

He said BNP is a pro-election party but certain quarters want to keep BNP out of the race. "We want to sit for dialogue under the leadership of Khaleda Zia and want to participate in a free and fair election," he said about their talks with the government that have long been on the holdback.

Delwar called for unity among political parties to thwart further advances of the "nexus of conspiracy." "No time for sitting idle," he told the lawyers loyal to his party, adding all need to prepare for movement to compel the government to release Khaleda Zia, Tarique Rahman and others.

The BNP secretary general, who was handpicked by party chief and ex-PM Khaleda Zia to replace dissident Mannan Bhuiyan before her arrest, said preparations are on for movement. "We know the time for movement and we will do the movement at appropriate time."

He had an angry reply to Mannan Bhuiyin's remarks that BNP's boycott of local elections was wrong. "Who is he to say so? Who is his master?" Delwar retorted.

He told his audience that "madam herself expelled him (Bhuiyan) for his conspiratorial role. BNP is one-and that is united under her leadership."

Delwar said despite a lapse of 19 months, the caretaker government has not yet arranged the elections. "The Election Commission too is working at the instruction of the government."

Later, just-released JCD president Azizul Bari Helal accompanied BNP secretary general Delwar, placed wreaths at party-founder Shaheed Ziaur Rahman's mazar and offered fateha.
