Monday, 23 June 2008

Reaffirming the caretaker government's (CG's) target to hold general election in December, Chief Adviser (CA) Fakhruddin Ahmed Sunday said his government is working to hold the election without influence of money, muscle and misuse of authority, reports UNB.

The head of the interim government said this when a six-member visiting delegation of the board of directors of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) led by Sebastian Paust called on him at the CA's office and discussed political and socio-economic matters of the country.

As the delegation members appreciated the government's ongoing dialogue with the political parties, Fakhruddin said he himself and the Election Commission (EC) many times announced and stated that general election would be held in December following the roadmap of the EC.

He said the CG is working with two major issues-preparation of voter lists with photographs, which was a demand of the people and political parties, and hold the election without influence of muscle, money and misuse of authority.

The CA said preparation of electoral rolls is almost complete. It is a tough job accomplishing the gigantic task of preparing voter lists with photographs of about 80 million voters in a short time facing various seasonal calamities.

Bangladesh can take pride after accomplishing the task. This is the strength of Bangladesh that if given a task the country can do it, he said.

The ADB delegation said they support the CG's policy to hold general election without influence of muscle, money and misuse of authority.

The multilateral development finance institution has assured continuation of its support to Bangladesh and the government.

Team leader Sebastian Paust said during their visits in a number of areas of Bangladesh, this time they have got a profound insight of the country. Bangladesh face many challenges and achieve successes.

He said people have positive impression about the CG and the leadership of CA Fakhruddin.

The delegation is on a visit to Bangladesh from June 18-23.

Other members of the delegation, referring their visits to a number of places to see the ADB's projects and talking with various people, commented that people are very optimistic and Bangladesh is a promising country.

On construction of the Padma Bridge, the CA said the bridge-project should be completed as soon as possible as the bridge is economically feasible like the Jamuna Bridge.

He said the present government is a constitutional government and besides election, it is also looking after economic issues.

The CA sought the contribution of ADB and other development partners in infrastructure development like transport and energy.

He said not only monetary assistance, the government needs combination of technology and money.

Fakhruddin emphasised on the support of development partners in mid-term and long-term projects particularly in the coastal belts.
