Chittagong, May 18: Chittagong city BNP leader and nomination aspirant for the mayor's post in the CCC election Dr Shahadat Hossain today claimed that Begum Khaleda Zia has been misguided in picking Manjur Alam for the post.
General Secretary of the BNP city unit Dr Shahadat also blamed president of city BNP Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury for the selection.
In a press conference at his chamber in the city this morning Shahadat said, the local leaders are annoyed at the decision but they will support Manju as he has been selected by the chairperson of the party.
When asked about his reaction to Dr Shahadat's remarks Khosru said he does not want to create any confusion further by giving any comment.
Former acting mayor Manjur Alam will contest in the mayoral post against probable Awami League candidate ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury in the banner of Chittagong Development Action Council.
Manjur was an Awami Leaguer for a long time but contested in the December 2008 parliamentary election as an independent candidate after being refused nomination from that party.
He lost to city Awami League leader Dr Afsarul Amin who contested the polls as an independent candidate after he too had failed to secure the nomination from his party.
At the press conference, Dr Shahadat said Manju was not an important person in the party that he was not even a primary member. "He is not in the list of three for the nomination and that's why grassroots leaders of 41 ward committees and 11 thana committees are sorely disappointed," he claimed.
Those grassroots workers questioned Amir Khosru his reason for 'selecting' a former Awami Leaguer but he could say nothing satisfactory, he alleged. "We could have won the election if a dedicated leader of the party was nominated," he added.
