Challenge lies in gaining global buyers’ trust: Food Minister

Safe Food Carnival kicks off in city

FE REPORT | Friday, 9 February 2024

Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder expressed concern on Thursday about the challenge of gaining trust from global buyers on the exportable products.
He highlighted the detrimental impact caused by a few local unscrupulous traders, which has tarnished the country's image.
Sadhan Chandra Majumder was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the Safe Food Carnival 2024, the first of its kind in the country.
Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) organised the three-day festival at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city.
The minister said, "Despite our diverse range of exportable goods, international consumers remain hesitant due to doubts about our product quality."
The minister lamented the missed opportunities, citing examples such as the abundance of mangoes produced locally but failing to secure foreign markets.
He also mentioned the decline in crustacean exports, attributing it to the influx of substandard products tarnishing the country's export reputation.
Mr Majumder also stressed the importance of adhering to international standards in product manufacturing to regain trust.
He urged businesses to strive for excellence, ensuring that their products meet the same standards found in foreign chain stores.
He stressed consumers' behaviour, noting that opting for lower-quality products may seem cost-effective while investing in quality food is paramount.
He urged consumers to prioritise quality over quantity, advocating for informed purchasing decisions to safeguard health.
Majumder called upon all stakeholders to collaborate in promoting safe food practices.
He proposed taking grassroots initiatives, suggesting that influencers such as mosque imams and school teachers play pivotal roles in building awareness.
Encouraging safe food habits from an early age, he reasoned, could instill lifelong practices.
BFSA Chairman Abdul Qayyum Sarkar chaired the function.
Food Secretary Ismail Hossain emphasised the need for launcing comprehensive awareness campaign, suggesting integration of safe food education into primary school curriculum.
The carnival, however, brought together 70 food trading entities from across the country. It will remain open from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm.
