CHANDPUR, June 15: Quail eggs are becoming popular in the district, thanks to their high nutritional value. Many young people involved in quail farming and selling eggs are becoming self-reliant.
In some busy areas of Chandpur district town -- Court Station, Kalibari, Pal Bazar, Natun Bazar, Baburhat, Wireless Bazar and Matlab Uttar -- quail eggs have been found for sale side by side with eggs of chicken and ducks.
Emon Mia, 23, a quail egg seller, said, "These eggs are now available everywhere in the town. I collect them directly from farms and sell a pack of 50 at Tk 140 to Tk 150."
"Every day, I sell some 1,000 to 1200 quail eggs," he added.
Al Amin and his younger brother Alif Mia sell boiled quail eggs in the town. They charge Tk 20 for a total of five pieces boiled eggs.
"Many people, particularly the younger ones, love boiled quail eggs with a bit of salt," said Al Amin.
According to Matlab North upazila's livestock officer Dr Jakir Hossain, there are around 15 quail farms in the upazila.
They are running their farms successfully, he said.
Chandpur Sadar upazila's livestock officer Md Makbul Hossain said he himself buys quail eggs for his children.
District livestock officer Dr Bakhtiaruddin said, "There are more than 100 quail farms in eight upazilas of the district. A number of enterprising youths have engaged themselves in rearing quail birds commercially."
"Upazila livestock officials encourage youths to raise these birds properly so that they can be self-reliant," he added.
