Wednesday, 29 October 2008

CHITTAGONG, Oct 28 (UNB): Mayor of Chittagong ABM Mohiuddin Chowdhury, released on bail from jail a few days back, was Tuesday indicted for tax evasion.
Judge SM Solaiman of the divisional Special Judge’s Court framed the charge and fixed November 5 for recording depositions by prosecution witnesses.
Earlier on October 23, the court rejected a petition of Mohiuddin's counsel for discharging him from the case.
Additional Commissioner of Taxes, Chittagong Ziaul Haque, filed the case against the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor on September 9 this year on charge of evading the payment of about Tk 2.75 million (27.58 lakh) in income tax. According to the case statement, Mohiuddin concealed information of wealth worth Tk 11.3 million (1.13 crore) in his statement submitted recently to the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC), causing a loss of Tk 2.75 million (27.58 lakh) to the exchequer. He is scheduled to leave for Bangkok today for treatment.
