Charge hearing deferred to June 9

Wednesday, 4 June 2008

A special court deferred Tuesday the hearing on charge framing in a bribery case against detained BNP senior secretary general Tarique Rahman and others to June 9 as the prosecution failed to produce Tarique for his "illness", reports UNB.

As the court resumed, the prosecution referred to the submitted custody warrant stating that accused Tarique, now under treatment at hospital prison cell, was "unfit to move due to his illness".

The prosecution, however, brought two other detained accused -former state minister for home Lutfozzaman Babar and Director of East West Property Development Pvt Ltd Abu Sufian - before the court to stand trial for the bribery over the murder of a Bashundhara company director.

The Anti-corruption Commi-ssion (ACC) filed the case with Ramna Police Station on October 4 last year, as a countrywide clean-up drive launched by the interim regime has been underway since the January 11, 2007 changeover.
