Charge hearing of Nasim-couple graft case deferred

Tuesday, 24 July 2007

The charge hearing of a graft case against detained former Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Nasim along with his wife could not be held Monday as the defence counsel sought time, reports UNB.
Seeking time, the defence counsel told the court that the co-accused Laila Arzumand Banu, now free on bail, was down with illness.Judge M Firoze Alam of the make-shift special court trying high-profile corruption suspects re-fixed July 26 (Thursday) as the date for the hearings. As the court resumed, Nasim, also a front-ranking Awami League (AL) leader, was brought in from jail amid tight security.
On March 21, Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Akhter Hossain filed the case against the Nasim couple with Dhanmondi police station for furnishing 'false information' in their wealth statement submitted to the ACC.
In the case, the ACC official alleged that the couple in their statements concealed information about their wealth worth Tk 12.6 million (1.26 crore).
