Charge hearings not held following pleas from defence side

Tuesday, 26 June 2007

Charge hearings of three cases transferred to the special anti-graft courts for quick disposal could not take place Monday for different pleas placed by the counsel for the accused, reports UNB.
When the court of Judge AK Roy resumed for charge hearing of the graft case filed against former communications minister and BNP stalwart Nazmul Huda along with his wife, a defence counsel prayed time, as the co-accused Sigma Huda could not appear in court owing to "illness".
The court, considering the prayer, adjourned the hearings until July 1 and directed the defence to bring Sigma to court on that date.
Detained Huda, who faces a number of criminal charges, including arms case, was brought before the court amid tight security.
Anti-Corruption Commi-ssion (ACC) Deputy Director Shafiqul Islam filed the case against the Huda-couple with Dhanmondi police station on March 21 this year for taking Tk 24 million in bribe from Mir Zahir Hossain, the owner of Mir Akter Hossain Limited, a construction firm.
On June 4, the ACC submitted the charge sheet before the Metropolitan Sessions Judge's court.
Another court of Judge M Firoze Alam, turning down the time-extension petition, fixed today (Tuesday) for charge hearing of the graft case filed against Shechchhasebok League General Secretary Pankaj Debnath along with his wife Monika Debnath.
The anti-corruption watchdog, ACC, has sued the couple on charge of amassing wealth worth Tk 650 million, disproportionate to their legal sources of income, and suppressing information in their wealth statement submitted earlier to it.
Pankaj, now in custody, was produced in the court. His wife, Monika, remained fugitive.
Meanwhile, the charge hearing of the graft case against T&T CBA leader Firoze Mian (dismissed) along with his wife was deferred by a week following a petition by his counsel, as he did not get the certified copies in connection with the case for preparation.
Judge M Ashraf Hossain passed orders fixing July 1 for charge hearing.
