Chemically ripened fruit sales go on in Pabna

PABNA, Dec 18: Sales of seasonal fruits ripened and made fresh with harmful chemicals carbide continued unabated in all the markets of Pabna town posing a serious threat to public health.
Markets insiders said, a section of unscrupulous traders are selling the food items cheating a large number of innocent consumers.
Business peoples alleged although sale of chemically fruits continues under the nose of lawmen, the authorised bodies are yet to launch any drive against the culprits.
Unscrupulous traders use carbide in fruits like bananas, pineapples, oranges, grapes, apricots etc. to keep them fresh. They also use textile dye in papaya, pomegranate and other fruits.
According to Bangladesh Pure Food Ordinance 2005 use of any poisonous or dangerous chemicals or ingredients like calcium carbide, formalin, pesticides or intoxicated food, color or flavor in any food, which many cause injury to human body is forbidden.
Chemically treated fruits are being sold at all the markets in different town areas including Ananta Bazar, Library Bazar, Stadium more, Masum Bazar Market, Hospital Road, Haspar more, Abdul Hamid Road, Traffic More, Pailyanpur More in the Pabna town.
A fruit trader in Abdul Karim admitted the fact said he was selling juicy carbide ripened fruits after treating them with formalin.
