Chicago corn climbs as rain may slow US planting

Sunday, 15 May 2011

CHICAGO, May 14 (Xinhua): The Chicago corn futures managed to bounce back Friday, as hefty rainfall this weekend in the eastern Corn Belt may interrupt corn planting. Soybean and wheat retreated, as outside market forces remained negative and fund-selling re-emerged. The most active corn contract for July delivery added 1.5 cents, or 0.2 per cent, to close at 6.82 U.S. dollars per bushel. July wheat dropped 7.75 cents, or 1.1 per cent, to 7.2775 dollars per bushel. July soybean pared 13.25 cents, or 1 per cent, to 13.295 dollars per bushel. The weather forecast for Friday to Sunday indicated 0.50 to 2.00 inches of rain across the Upper Plain of corn and spring wheat areas and Eastern grain belt of Illinois, Indiana and Ohio.
