Chief prosecutor of ACC Mahbubur Rahman resigns

Monday, 2 July 2007

Chief Prosecutor of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Advocate Mahbubur Rahman Sunday stepped down amidst media reports about his alleged corruption in the past, reports UNB.
He tendered his resignation to ACC Chairman Hasan Mashhud Chowdhury citing 'health ground' after less than a month of his appointment.
Mahbub was appointed the chief of 84 ACC prosecution lawyers on June 6.
In his reaction to Mahbub's resignation, the ACC chairman said it was a right decision and the Commission would be more careful in giving such appointments in the future.
"The matter has been settled…He (Mahbub) himself has resigned. I think it was a right decision on his part. The decision was good...This was indeed a right decision…It's an amicable settlement of the situation," he told reporters while coming out of his office in the afternoon.
Asked if it was a lapse of judgement on the ACC's part to appoint someone like Mahbub as the chief prosecutor, Mashhud said, "If you're satisfied hearing from me, you can think so. No lawyer can be found in the country who has no involvement with politics."
Asked if the ACC told him to step down, he said the main thing is that he has now resigned. "We came to know through you (media) and respected the opinion of the people…And you know how such thing happens."
