Child labour-the other side
Saturday, 7 March 2009
WHEN chased out of work places that prohibit child labour, do children stop working? The answer should be apparent to people who care to know about it. Well, they don't stop working. They just change jobs. If they cannot work in a garments factory or a foundry - jobs in media attention - they will sell peanuts, towels, books, popcorn or work as labourers. The reason is simple - they have to eat to survive and have to eke out a living.
For those people who make much about their working conditions or the fact that they work when they should be going to school, I would venture to offer solutions to the problem. If they do not want kids to work, they must make sure that the kids get something to eat. It is something these people think is not their concern.
And of course, the favourite punching bag is the government. The government must provide for them! Where is the government going to get so much money to do this? Ours is not a first world nation. Just because some of our people have Mercedes, BMWs and Prados does not mean we are not in the Third World.
Poverty is a reality in this land, just as in other developing countries. If some people want to throw the children out of the job market, then let them provide for them, not only food but also education. Any takers?
