Sunday, 2 December 2007

Children and youths were urged to take up leadership in preventing the spread of AIDS as well as to protect themselves and others from its deadly grip, reports UNB.
Amra Kuri, a juvenile organisation, organised a discussion under the aegis of the UNFPA on the issue of AIDS disease in the Shishu (Children's) Academy auditorium Saturday to mark the World AIDS Day.
The discussion was held to draw the attention of the children and adolescents of the country, who remain marginalised despite their high exposure to AIDS virus.
Presided over by Amanullah Khan, UNB Chairman and Adviser to Amra Kuri, the function was attended by Assistant Representative of the UNFPA Mohammad Nurul Amin as the chief guest.
Among the special guests and speakers were UNFPA's programme associate Asma Akter, celebrated singers Meherin and Fakir Shahabuddin Chowdhury, acting Principal of T&T College Mohammad Fakhruzzaman and cultural event organiser and president of Tulip Entertainment Inc Alamgir Ahmed.
UNFPA assistance representative Mohammad Nurul Amin in his address called upon all actors of the society to provide leadership from their respective position to contain the AIDS epidemic.
He said that everyone including the children and youths should be made aware of the terrible consequences of AIDS on society. "Youths and women are more vulnerable to AIDS in our society. Poverty, high density of population and superstition that prevail in Bangladesh also contribute to the risks of AIDS in the country," he added.
