China becomes largest shipbuilder

BEIJING, Sept 18 (CEIS): China's new shipbuilding orders grew by 165 per cent year on year in the first half of 2007 surpassing that of the Republic of Korea (ROK) to rank first in the world, a report from China Association of National Shipbuilding Industry disclosed.
Statistics show that China's new orders totaled 49.9 million dwt in the first half year, while ROK's new orders totaled 42.8 million dwt.
But in terms of compensated gross tonnage (cgt), ROK still had more new orders totaling 15.3 million cgt, while China's new orders only totaled 13.8 million cgt.
Statistics show China's shipbuilding industry reported a strong development in the first half of 2007. Its export reached 5.49 billion US dollars, up 61 per cent year on year. The export accounted for more than 80 per cent of China's total ship output, hitting a record high.
China export ships to 128 countries and areas, including 74 with export value higher than 10 million US dollars. Singapore, Germany and Hong Kong remained as China's major ship export markets.
China State Shipbuilding Corporation and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation completed 3.867 million dwt of new ships in January-June, up nine per cent year on year. They undertook 22.67 million dwt of new orders in the period, up 95 per cent setting a record high.
